Q: How do I change my screen resolution?

A: To change your screen resolution in Windows 98, ME, 2000 and XP, right click on the desktop, choose Properties, and Settings. You can change the screen resolution using the sliding bar.

In Apple Mac OS X, open System Preferences, choose Display and choose your preferred screen resolution.

Q: What are cookies?

A: Cookies are small files that are stored on your computer which contain information from certain websites. They are very common and allow websites to personalise the user's experience and preferences when visiting that website. For example, when you return to a website, and it welcomes you by your name, this is down to a cookie stored on your computer. A cookie is usually downloaded by ticking the 'remember me' option when asked. Other preferences for the website, including country or time zone, where applicable, are saved using a cookie. Cookies can save a lot of time, and reduce the need to remember a lot of passwords and log in information as the details are stored within the cookie.

Cookies can also store personal information, such as address, telephone number, and email address. The cookie only stores information that you provide, so if you don’t provide your bank or credit card details, the cookie won’t store them. For security reasons, only the website that created the cookie is able to read it.

There are three main types of cookies. Persistent cookies are saved on your computer, and remain there, even after you close your Internet browser. Temporary cookies are only stored until the Internet browser is closed. Third party cookies are often used to track website visiting habits and can be used for marketing purposes.

Cookies can be turned off, so that personal information is not retained when you return to a website, and third party cookies can’t be installed to track your website visiting habits. Turning cookies off however, may mean that some websites don’t appear as they should do as some sites rely on cookies. Websites which provide local weather or local news information, for example, use cookies to determine the region or location. Your Internet browser can be configured so that you are prompted when a website is attempting to install a cookie, and you can either choose to accept or reject it.

Q: How do I turn on cookies?

A: To change the cookies setting in Internet Explorer, click on Tools, and Internet Options, and then choose the Privacy tab. Click the Default button, or move the slider bar up or down as necessary, and then click on OK.

To change the cookies setting in Apple Safari, (they are turned on by default), click on Safari in the top left hand corner, choose Preferences, Security, and you can then modify the cookie settings.

To change the cookies setting in other browsers, please see the relevant browsers Help section, or the website for the browser.

Q: What is JavaScript?

A: JavaScript is a scripting language that is used along with traditional HTML to create web pages. In the past, web designers designed web pages, and programmers developed applications. With the introduction of JavaScript, web designers are now able to add more functionality to their web pages, without having to learn programming languages. For example, with JavaScript, text fields can be validated, buttons can be enabled and disabled, and events can be triggered when pages open and close.

There are many more examples of JavaScript being used in web pages, such as to create menus, to provide interactive calendars, to produce background effects and even for playing games. JavaScript can also be used to display information based on variables such as the time of day. Another very useful function of JavaScript is to identify which browser the user is using, and display the web site accordingly.

As JavaScript is a popular website authoring tool, and is being implemented more widely, it should be mentioned that some websites won’t work properly if JavaScript isn’t enabled.

Q: How do I enable JavaScript?

A: To enable JavaScript in Internet Explorer click on Tools, Internet Options, and Security. Choose Custom Level, and scroll down to Active Scripting and ensure that it is enabled. Click on OK to save the changes, and OK to close the browser. Restart the browser for the changes to take effect.

To enable JavaScript in Apple Safari, click on Safari in the top left hand corner, and choose Preferences. Click on Security and click on Enable JavaScript. Close the window, and the browser. Restart Safari for the changes to take effect.

To enable JavaScript in other browsers, please see the relevant Help section, or website for the browser.

Q: Can I change the font, font size and font colour if I find www.euroscooters.co.uk hard to read?

A: www.euroscooters.co.uk uses CSS (cascading style sheets) to lay out each page. Using CSS allows pages to be laid out and formatted the same. If you wish to change the way your browser displays pages, you can change the settings to make the site easier to read and navigate, you can. In Internet Explorer, click on Tools, Internet Options, and General. You can change Colours, Fonts, and Accessibility options and even use your own Cascading Style Sheet in order make websites easier to read and use.

Apple Safari also allows you to specify how pages appear when they open and choose which fonts are used, whether or not to display images, and whether to use your own Cascading Style Sheet (CSS). To make any changes, choose Preferences from the Safari menu, and then Appearance, and make any necessary changes. If you want to use your own Cascading Style Sheet, click Advanced and choose Other from the Style Sheet pop-up menu then choose Locate to find your style sheet and then select it.

It is important to remember that many web pages specify their own fonts, and so your font settings will only affect the pages that do not specify fonts. Web pages may also specify style sheets that override your style sheet.

To change the way other browsers handle colours and fonts, please see the relevant browsers Help section, or the website for the browser.

Apple’s Mac OS X operating system includes VoiceOver software, which reads out loud what is on the screen, and can be useful to those who have visual disabilities. To turn on VoiceOver choose the Universal Access option in System Preferences, or by pressing command-F5 (or Fn-command-F5 if you are using a laptop). VoiceOver can be customised by pressing Control-Option-F8 when VoiceOver is running, and making the necessary changes.
